Glaucoma

Glaucoma isn’t just one eye condition. It’s a medical name for a group of related symptoms and results that share similarities in how they damage the optic nerve in the eye. Once the damage is set, then the eye’s information can’t transmit correctly to the brain. In most cases, the eye conditions involve pressure on one eye or both. As the pressure reaches the optic nerve, it can cause permanent damage and blindness. We at ClearView Eyecare in Bellingham, WA, in the Northern Washington, WA, area, can help treat and diagnose glaucoma.

How Do I Know if I Have Glaucoma?

Unfortunately, some glaucoma cases damage the eye before people realize they have the condition. This is why regular eye exams by a Bellingham optometrist can be so important. We can find the condition before the patient even knows it is happening. Once the symptoms become apparent, the pressure is likely already causing some kind of damage to the optic nerve, which is causing the related vision problem.

Glaucoma also shows up later in life, which is why it is given a label of being an age-related eye condition. There are specific backgrounds that have a higher likelihood of glaucoma as well. Hispanics and Blacks tend to statistically have more cases of than Asian or Caucasian patients. That said, glaucoma pops up in all populations and backgrounds to some extent.

Eye Exam

If glaucoma is identified with an eye exam by an eye doctor, it’s very likely to have been caught early before serious damage has occurred. In these cases, there is a higher chance of keeping one’s vision and stopping the problem or even reversing the progression of the pressure. An optometrist on our team has the necessary training to find the early signs of glaucoma in a patient, especially when it can be caught before affecting vision.

Glaucoma Treatment

Treatment for glaucoma might focus on two things. The first is prescription eye drops that can be used to lower the pressure in the eye and thus prevent the damage. The second is surgery which can be used to drain the eye of the fluid causing the pressure. Although our optometrists do not offer surgery, we can provide a consultation and help you find an eye surgeon if we think you need one.
